Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is an approach that focuses on the positive use of a space in order to maintain quality of life for intended users, while offering a sense of security by increasing the difficulty of criminal or abnormal activities. WHGA’s Site Security Consulting Group applies their expertise in CPTED principles during the preparation of CPTED surveys for existing and proposed facilities.
Existing Facilities
WHGA performs CPTED surveys for existing facilities through a detailed evaluation of the built environment and the current security program. The survey will identify opportunities to apply CPTED principles and make recommendations with regard to lighting, pedestrian/vehicular circulation, surveillance, access control, plantings, maintenance, vandalism, etc. The built environment includes exterior spaces such as adjacent properties, site/building perimeter, vehicular areas, pedestrian areas, utility/service areas, and recreational areas. In addition, the interior building environment is also evaluated to identify CPTED opportunities.
Proposed Facilities
WHGA performs CPTED surveys for proposed facilities through a detailed evaluation of the to-be-built environment as reflected on the site design. The survey will identify CPTED opportunities and make recommendations regarding the proposed design. It is STRONGLY recommended that the CPTED survey for proposed facilities be performed prior to or during the schematic design phase of a project in order to identify opportunities early and minimize design/development costs, and prevent costly retrofit. The CPTED survey evaluation may also be conducted in conjunction with the risk/vulnerability assessment as part of WHGA’s ISSD process.
